Apollo IE Screams Through The Streets Of Hong Kong Posted: 15 Jan 2018 04:31 AM PST If looks are anything to go by, the Apollo Intensa Emozione (IE) could be the first model from a new supercar manufacturer that may actually have an impact on the industry. Of course, it is just early days at the moment but the Apollo IE has created some serious online fanfare since its premiere, fanfare which is commonly limited to new vehicles from Pagani and Koenigsegg. Its design is the most obvious reason for the hype. Looking more like a movie prop that a production vehicle, the IE pushes the boundaries of what's possible and makes almost every other supercar and hypercar appear benign. And then there's this engine! Power comes from a naturally-aspirated 6.3-liter V12, sourced from the Ferrari F12, albeit now upgraded with custom internals. Recently filmed taking to the streets of Hong Kong, we can't help but be reminded of a particularly memorable Pagani Zonda Cinque video that depicted the desirable Italian exotic also cruising on a Hong Kong highway at night. Do you think the IE could become this decade's Zonda? VIDEO |
2019 Toyota Avalon Arrives In Detroit With Fresh Styling And Tech Posted: 15 Jan 2018 04:11 AM PST Despite most consumers flocking to crossovers and SUVs, Toyota is not ready to put its traditional saloons aside, unveiling the fifth generation Avalon during the 2018 Detroit Auto Show. Underpinned by the TNGA architecture, the car is now longer, wider, and lower than before, with 196in (4,978mm) in length, 72.8in (1,849mm) in width, 56.5in (1,435mm) in height, and a 113in (2,870mm) long wheelbase. It features new styling, with a very large grille at the front flanked by slim headlights with incorporated DRLs, a muscular yet sporty profile, and a redesigned rear end, with new taillights connected by a prominent strip. Toyota's new Entune 3.0 infotainment system dominates the central console and provides access to connected services, Wi-Fi hotspot, and sound system, among others. Audiophiles can go ahead and get the optional JBL 7.1-channel system, which boasts 1,200-watt. Qi wireless mobile device charger, Toyota Remote Connect with Smartwatch, Amazon Alexa Connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also part of the offerings, along with up to 5 USB ports, and a selection of wood and leather trims. There's a new 7-inch display in the instrument cluster as well, which allows users to see the vehicle information, safety settings, navigation, and other functions, while the addition of a 10-inch head-up display, said to be the largest in the segment, should earn extra points for the car. Powering the 2019 Toyota Avalon are two engines: an upgraded version of the 3.5-liter V6, with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and a 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid, with a 650-volt electric motor and CVT. No power figures have been released yet, but these appear to be very similar to the units that power the Camry, and in the latter, the V6 makes 301hp (305PS) and 267lb-ft (362Nm) of torque, whereas the smaller one is rated at 203hp (206PS) and 184lb-ft (249Nm) of torque. Other changes made to the new Avalon include the active variable suspension with adaptive damping, shock absorbers at each corner with solenoid control valves for independent wheel control, front and rear G sensors, and a multilink setup at the rear. Users will get to choose between one of three driving modes on all trim levels - Eco, Normal, and Sport, while those that sit behind the wheel of the Touring grades will get a fourth one, called Sport+. Elsewhere, the 2019 Toyota Avalon benefits from active noise control, engine sound enhancement, a new exhaust system, and intake sound generator. A suite of safety systems equip the car, including the standard Toyota Safety Sense P, which offers Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, and Automatic High Beams. Other driving assistance features available are the Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Back Guide Monitor, Panoramic View Monitor with Alert, and Intelligence Clearance Sonar with Rear Cross Traffic Braking system. Toyota will start taking orders for the 2019 Avalon in late spring, with pricing to be announced at a later date. PHOTO GALLERY |
Porsche 9e1 Study Envisions An All-Electric Future Hypercar Posted: 15 Jan 2018 03:59 AM PST Porsche has said it won't do another hypercar until the technology has developed to mark a significant leap forward from the 918 Spyder. With the 918 being a hybrid, it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect its replacement to be powered by an all-electric drivetrain. One take at the 918 successor is the 9e1, a study from French designer Romain Gauvin, who has drawn inspiration from the inimitable shape of the 911 and applied it to a futuristic electric hypercar concept. That includes design cues such as a pair of round headlights, a gently rounded nose, a long front hood, an upright windscreen and a rear end sloping down to an enveloping strip of taillights. The muscular rear haunches also look like a suitable evolution of the 911, and Gauvin has even gone so far as to envision placing the main battery pack all the way at the back to preserve the 911's signature position of the engine. All in all, it's futuristic design is definitely suitable for a future hypercar. On the other hand, Porsche prefers evolution rather than revolution, although its designers obviously have more freedom with hypercars than with the glacially evolving 911. Photo Gallery |
Ferrari's Racing Cars Are A Sight To Behold At Autosport International Posted: 15 Jan 2018 03:32 AM PST Arguably more than any other, Ferrari is a racing team as much as it is an automaker. And it displayed its enviable roster of competition models at the world's preeminent racing-car show in the UK. Leaving its road cars behind at the factory in Maranello, the Prancing Horse marque arrived at the Autosport International show in Birmingham, England, this past weekend with no fewer than four track-bound models. There was the 488 Challenge, which heralds the launch of a new spec racing series (like the ones it runs in other parts of the world) specifically for the UK starting next year. It was joined as well by the 488 GTE – the top racing version of Ferrari's mid-engined V8 supercar – this one campaigned by James Calado and Alessandro Pier Guidi in the LMGTE Pro class of the 2017 FIA World Endurance Championship. That very car won three out of the nine races this season – at the Nurburgring, the Circuit of the Americas, and Fuji – to secure the drivers' title. (Their teammates Davide Rigon and Sam Bird won two more to help Ferrari lock down the GT manufacturers' trophy.) As if those weren't enough, Ferrari also brought out the FXX-K Evo, which made its public debut at the show – along with not one, but two F1 cars: the F2004 that Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello drove to the world championship fourteen years ago (now part of the F1 Clienti program), and the SF70H that Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen drove this past season. It's a heck of a sight, seeing them all together on display under the same roof. But if you didn't get a chance to swing through the NEC in Birmingham this past weekend, you can check them out in the image gallery below. Photo Gallery |
New Electrified Mercedes AMG 53 Models Break Cover With Up To 456HP And No Lag Posted: 15 Jan 2018 03:59 AM PST Mercedes-AMG has revealed the new 53-Series models of the CLS, E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet in full, introducing not only a new model designation but the first AMG models to feature electrification as well. The highlight of the new models is of course their powertrain, which is comprised of a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine with 435hp and 383lb-ft (520Nm) of torque paired to an EQ Boost starter-alternator that can momentarily provide an additional 21hp (16kW) and 184lb-ft (250Nm) of torque. The EQ Boost starter-alternator also feeds the vehicle's 48-volt electrical system. A nine-speed AMG Speedshift TCT 9G automatic transmission sends the power to AMG's fully variable Performance 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system. AMG has fitted the new straight-six engine with one regular turbocharger and one electric auxiliary compressor while the EQ Boost unit is mounted between the engine and transmission. The electric compressor offers high charge pressure without any delay when moving off with the help of the EQ Boost unit, enabling the 3.0-liter straight six engine to perform essentially without lag. The main goal was to reduce fuel consumption and emissions but still offer the performance and dynamics of a true AMG. The new CLS 53 claims a 0-62mph (100km/h) in 4.5 seconds and a top speed up to 167mph (270km/h) while returning a combined 8.5lt/100km (27.6mpg). The driver gets to choose between five different driving modes ("Eco", "Comfort", "Sport", "Sport+" and "Individual"). The chassis has been upgraded with a multi-chamber air suspension, special steering knuckles and load-bearing joints and more negative camber on both axles. Mercedes AMG will debut the new 53-Series models with a special Edition 1 version of the CLS 53 4Matic+ that features exclusive details, including a special interior with details finished in a fine copper color, black nappa leather with contrasting copper stitching, ambient lighting and more. Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 Shows Its Stylish Exterior In Official Teaser Posted: 15 Jan 2018 02:56 AM PST The new Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4Matic+ is about to be unveiled at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, but until then, we get to catch a glimpse of it in an official film. Building upon the third generation of the car, it gets a more aggressive design over the lesser versions, such as the AMG badges all around, tweaked bumpers on both ends, boot lid spoiler, and a quad exhaust system, alongside a few sportier touches made to the cabin. Mercedes-AMG continues to keep the CLS 53's specs close to its chest, but it's believed to come with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 3.0-liter straight-six engine with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack, developing up to 430hp. Moreover, the '4Matic+' moniker reveals that it gets the company's all-wheel drive system, probably similar to the one of the new E63 models. In this form, the automaker states that it returns 28 US mpg (33.6 UK mpg / 8.4 l/100 km) on average, and emits 200 g/km of CO2. Moreover, the new Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 won't slot between the 43 and 63 variants as it was initially expected, as the latter will be kept away from the third-gen car to make room for the AMG GT 4, so what we're looking at here is the new range-topping model. 2019 Ram 1500 Packs Mild-Hybrid Powertrains Under New Metal Posted: 14 Jan 2018 11:05 PM PST It's a pickup truck bonanza this week under the roof of Detroit's Cobo Hall, where GM has introduced the new Chevy Silverado, Ford the new Ranger, and FCA the new Ram 1500. You can tell the new Ram is new just by looking at it. Gone, for example, is the crosshair grille that carried over from when it was still a line in the Dodge portfolio, and the bodywork looks altogether more modern and muscular. But there's a lot more going on with the new truck than some fresh sheetmetal. To start with, it's lighter than the model it replaces – nearly 225 pounds lighter, which means it can haul more and consume less fuel in the process. The new bodywork is also more aerodynamic, and even incorporates some adaptive aero in the form of a electrically deployable spoiler in the front bumper. More fuel economy gains will come from under the bulging hood, where the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 now delivers 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque, the 5.7-liter Hemi V8 a solid 395 hp and 410 lb-ft. The bigger news is the arrival of an optional new eTorque system – FCA's term for a 48-volt mild-hybrid assist, contributing an extra 90 lb-ft to the V6 and 130 lb-ft to the V8 (which also features a smoother cylinder deactivation system as well). The engines come mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Look for details on the EcoDiesel V6 (which Ford's chasing with its new six-cylinder Power Stroke) to be detailed later. But for now, the 2019 Ram 1500 can haul up to 12,700 pounds on a trailer, or carry up to 2,300 pounds on its back. The brakes are bigger – the largest in the segment at 14.9 inches up front – and an electric parking brake come standard. The interior is all new as well, with more space, better ergonomics, and upgraded equipment. Available infotainment screens measure up to 12 inches (separate from the 7-inch display in the instrument cluster). There's more USB ports and power outlets, available onboard wifi, and all the safety systems you could ask for: 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane-keeping assist... the works. Of course, this being a full-size pickup, buyers will be able to choose between a staggering array of configurations and specs. There'll be six trim levels, 12 exterior colors, 15 wheel designs, three cab styles, three bed lengths (which are longer than before). And you can rest assured that FCA has taken the opportunity to load the top trims with ever-more luxurious equipment, like real leather, wood, and metal trim. The Rebel is back for the rock-crawling set with 33-inch tires, a lifted suspension with Bilstein shocks, and locking rear diff, and there's a 4x4 Off-Road Package available for other trim levels as well. So whatever you might want to use your truck for, chances are you'll be able to order a 2019 Ram 1500 just the way you want it, and enjoy all the improvements once you do. Photo Gallery |
Ford's Bringing Back The Mach 1 As An Electric Performance SUV Posted: 14 Jan 2018 10:09 PM PST Between the new Ranger, the Bullitt Mustang, and the Edge ST, Ford has plenty of new metal to showcase at the Detroit Auto Show this year. But the one that's sparked our imagination the most isn't even there. Alongside all the new models revealed, Ford announced a new performance SUV in the pipeline. It'll be all-electric, and it'll be called the Mach 1. Recognize the name? It was a variant of the Mustang sold back in the 1970s, and again a few years after the turn of the millennium. This time it won't be on a pony car, though, adopting a much larger (or at least taller) form – ostensibly to take on the Tesla Model X. The project is being developed by Ford Team Edison, the automaker's electric propulsion division, and is set to debut sometime in 2020. More than that, we don't know at the moment, but the Blue Oval has released this minute-long teaser video to drum up a little excitement. Video |
Hello, Are You The 2019 Hyundai Veloster N? Posted: 14 Jan 2018 06:55 PM PST Hyundai has been steadily teasing us with preview images for the forthcoming all-new Veloster, scheduled for debut at the Detroit Auto Show this week. But it looks like it's already leaked out... again. Korean site TopRider (sent to our attention by tipster GT) appears to not only have a clear – if somewhat low-res – image of the standard Veloster, in red with a black roof, but a shot of the high-performance Veloster N as well. The letter N, for those who haven't been following, is the moniker Hyundai is applying to its own performance line, directed by former BMW M chief engineer Albert Biermann. The sub-brand has already yielded the i30 N hot hatch for the European market, but is working on a heated-up version of the Veloster for the North American market as well. Expect the same 2.0-liter turbo four to make the transition from one to the other, churning out between 246 and 271 horsepower – along with other performance enhancements. Those amber side-markers in the corners of the headlights tell us these images could portray that US version, but we'll find out one way or another tomorrow when Hyundai takes the wraps off the new sport hatch at Detroit's Cobo Center – so watch this space. 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Is An Icon Reborn Posted: 14 Jan 2018 06:32 PM PST The Mercedes G-Class has withstood the test of time and become an icon for the brand. The company is hoping to build on that success by introducing the all-new model at the North American International Auto Show. Redesigning an icon isn't easy but Mercedes seems to have pulled it as the 2019 G-Class manages to capture the spirit of the original. Starting up front, we can see a familiar grille which is flanked by circular headlights. The model also has an evolutionary hood as well as a new front bumper which is more rounded to help improve aerodynamics. Moving further back, the G-Class retains its boxy styling and upright greenhouse. The model's distinctive trim strips have also carried over and so has the spare tire carrier. Despite the familiar appearance, the redesigned model is 53 mm (2 inches) longer and 121 mm (4.7 inches) wider than its predecessor. The styling changes continue in the cabin as drivers will find an all-new steering wheel, metallic accents, and wood or carbon fiber trim. The SUV comes with analogue gauges but customers can order a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster to match the 12.3-inch infotainment display. Elsewhere, there are heated seats, a seven-speaker audio system, and numerous new storage compartments. A dizzying array of options will be available including a 16-speaker Burmester surround sound system, designo leather upholstery, and an Active Multicontour Seat package which adds front seats with heating, ventilation, and massage functions. If that's not luxurious enough, the Exclusive Interior Plus package adds Nappa leather upholstery on the doors, dashboard, and center console. Even without additional options, the 2019 G-Class is more comfortable than its predecessor as it features an assortment of changes to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness. The model's increased dimensions also provide drivers and passengers with additional leg, shoulder, and elbow room. Rear seat passengers, in particular, receive an additional 5.9 inches (150 mm) of legroom. At launch, the model will be offered with a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that develops 416 hp (310 kW) and 450 lb-ft (609 Nm) of torque. It will be connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission which is obviously paired to a four-wheel drive system. At SUV's unveiling, Arnold Schwarzenegger asked Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche about the possibly of a pure electric variant but he simply said "Stay tuned." Despite the focus on luxury and comfort, the all-new G-Class is even more capable off-road than its predecessor. In order to achieve this, the model rides on a ladder-type frame and has been equipped with three 100-percent differential locks. The biggest change is the addition of a new independent front suspension and front axle. The rear axle is also new and Mercedes says it helps the model stay on "track more robustly." Thanks to these changes, the G-Class has approach and departure angles of 31° and 30° as well as a maximum fording depth of 70 centimeters (27.5 inches). The SUV also boasts a 26° breakover angle and 241 mm (9.5 inches) of ground clearance between the axles. Other off-road focused features include a new transfer case and an all-new G-Mode which changes the characteristics of the accelerator, steering system, and adjustable damping system to ensure maximum off-road capability. Besides being more capable off-road, the G-Class has an AMG-tuned suspension and a curb weight that has been reduced by approximately 170 kg (374 lbs) thanks to use of lightweight materials such as aluminum. The all-new G-Class will go on sale in the United States in late 2018 and pricing will be announced closer to launch. In Germany, the G-Class will be launched in June and be priced from €107,040.50 ($130,532). Photo GalleryVideo |
A New 2019 VW Jetta Arrives To Win You Back After Dieselgate Posted: 14 Jan 2018 07:46 PM PST The Volkswagen Jetta is one of the automaker's most successful vehicles in the brand's lineup and the new one carries a rap sheet that's better in every single way. The 2019 Jetta made its debut today at the Detroit Auto Show and the vehicle sports some upgrades that should increase its popularity. The seventh-generation of the Jetta now sits on VW's modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform, which gives the sedan better everything, claims the automaker: more interior space, better fuel-efficiency figures, the ability to wear a more modern design, and the opportunity to tack on more high-tech features. On the outside, the 2019 Jetta sports a look that's not as mundane as the previous model, but it's not radically different. A new enlarged grille dominates the front fascia that's flanked by C-shaped LED headlights. The creased hood is also a nice touch at the front. Along the side, the sloped roof gives the sedan a coupe-like silhouette – again, it's nothing crazy – while the changes to the rear end are much more minor: new taillights, exhaust outlets, and a chiseled rear fascia. Moving to the MQB platform has given the Jetta new dimensions, as well. It's longer, wider, and taller than before. The front overhang is shorter, while the overhang at the back has grown, which one would expect would allow the sedan to carry more stuff, but cargo capacity remains the same. The growth in overall size, though, has allowed Volkswagen to create a more spacious cabin, which has also been redesigned. The Jetta's cabin has gone from clinical to more upscale thanks to higher-quality materials, 10-color ambient lighting that wraps around the interior, and funky trapezoidal design pieces – like the vents. The redesigned center stack now features a larger screen – exact dimensions haven't been released yet – that's angled towards the driver and perched higher up on the dash. VW's new, highly-configurable Digital Cockpit replaces the sedan's regular instrument cluster on high-end trims. Despite the coupe-like roofline, VW claims the Jetta offers more room on the inside. Head room, knee room, and shoulder room have all increased from the previous model. In addition to the more spacious interior, the Jetta's list of safety features has grown too. Things like autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring with rear-traffic alert, and a lane keeping system are all available. While the Jetta sports a new look and a classier interior, the engine under the creased hood goes unchanged. Power for the sedan comes from a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 148 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The old sedan's six-speed automatic gearbox has been ditched in favor of an eight-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual transmission is standard. In spite of all the changes, the Jetta's price tag has decreased, though not substantially. The 2019 Jetta, which will go on sale in the United States in the second quarter of the year, will start at $18,545 before destination. That's $100 less than the outgoing model. The vehicle will be available in six different trims when it goes on sale: S, SE, SEL, SEL Premium, and R-Line. Photo Gallery |
Nissan Shows First Photo Of Aggresively Styled CUV Concept Posted: 14 Jan 2018 04:40 PM PST After a trio of teaser videos, Nissan dropped the first image of their upcoming crossover concept which will debut at the North American International Auto Show next week. The company is staying tight-lipped about the model but the latest clip reveals the concept will be a relatively small crossover that features aggressive side skirts and massive alloy wheels. We can also see the model will have boomerang-shaped headlights, a rakish windscreen, and a tailgate-mounted spoiler. One of the more interesting aspects of the teaser video is that it shows the concept has something mounted on the roof. Since the concept is a crossover, it would be natural to assume this is a roof rack but Nissan has been touting the model's "intelligent mobility" technology so it's possible that the mysterious object could be related to autonomous driving technology. Regardless of what's on the roof, the video also gives us a glimpse of the interior and it shows the concept will have a minimalist cabin will have a rectangular steering wheel. The traditional instrument cluster has also been jettisoned and replaced by a widescreen display that spans the width of the interior. The display also appears to have two side view displays and this suggests the side mirrors have been replaced by video cameras. Note: Post has been updated with an image of Nissan's crossover study Video |
Chrysler's Recalling 160,000 Stalling Pacifica Minivans Posted: 14 Jan 2018 04:02 PM PST Chrysler is having issues with some units of the Pacifica stalling, so it's issued a recall about its minivan. The problem, which affects 162,508 vrhicles worldwide, stems from the engine control unit, which "may incorrectly assess the engines' operating status," according to the manufacturer, who adds that "if this occurs, the engine may stall." The issue could arise in a wide array of circumstances: when the vehicle is idling, starting, turning, or driving at low and steady speeds. It appears to be limited strictly to conventionally powered 2017 models, and not to the hybrid version. Of the vehicles being recalled, the vast majority (153,859 units) are located in the United States. Another 7,457 are in Canada, 974 in Mexico and 245 outside of North America. No injuries related to the issue have been reported so far, with the drivers apparently able to restart the vehicle without difficulty after it stalls. The fix will involve Chrysler's dealers simply reflashing the software. Photo Gallery |
Jaguar Developed This F-Type SVR GT4 For Wounded Warriors Posted: 14 Jan 2018 02:56 PM PST Proud as its racing record stands, it's been a while since we've seen production-based Jaguars competing on track. That's all about to change, though, with the car you see here and a unique partnership. What you're looking at is the first customer-racing version of the Jaguar F-Type SVR, specially catered by Jaguar Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations division to meet GT4 regulations. The brakes, wheels, tires, suspension, transmission, and engine have all been refitted specifically for competition use. The all-wheel drive system was ditched in favor of rear-drive only, and the 5.0-liter supercharged V8 will likely have been detuned to comply with the rulebook. Perhaps even more intriguing, however, is the team that will field the first of these competition-spec Jags in the British GT Championship this season. The F-Type GT4 was commissioned by Invictus Games Racing, an offshoot of the wounded-warrior athletic competition, and as such will put a roster of injured military servicemen behind the wheel. The initial lineup includes JLR engineer and former paratrooper Basil Rawlinson, former RAF sergeant Ben Norfolk, and former marine-commando Paul Vice, a partial amputee who won seven medals (including two golds) in the 2016 Invictus Games. They'll be paired with (and mentored by) experienced racers Jason Wolfe and Matthew George, in a team started by Superdry clothing designer James Holder (who drove in the same series in 2016). They'll hit the track for the first race of the season on March 31 at Oulton Park, where they'll be first and foremost racing against each other, but also hoping to challenge for race wins. 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt Unveiled With 475HP And Signature Exhaust Posted: 14 Jan 2018 07:42 PM PST The rumors were true as Ford presented a new generation of its lauded Mustang Bullitt based on the S-550 at the Detroit auto show on Sunday. Ford fed this 2019 special-edition Mustang a manual transmission, where the gear shifter features a white cue ball knob as a nod to the car that lit up our movie screens 50 years ago. The new Bullitt is also wearing everything from the Mustang GT Premium and Performance Package, while its upgraded 5.0-liter V8 engine pushes down 475 HP and 420 lb-ft (570 Nm) of torque, allowing for a top speed of 163 mph (263 km/h). Standard equipment includes the leather steering wheel, unique green accent stitching and a 12" all-digital LCD instrument cluster (identical to the one in the 2018 Mustang), although the Bullitt comes with a unique welcome screen that features an image of the car instead of the pony logo. "This new Bullitt is, as Steve McQueen was, effortlessly cool," stated Darrell Behmer, Mustang chief designer. "As a designer, it's my favorite Mustang - devoid of stripes, spoilers and badges. It doesn't need to scream about anything - it's just cool." As for why the car sounds the way it does, it's the standard active valve performance exhaust system with new Black NitroPlate exhaust tips that's responsible for the signature burble. The Bullitt also has a new Open Air Induction System and a Shelby GT350 intake manifold with 87 mm throttle bodies and powertrain control module calibration. With color options, you get to choose between Shadow Black or the classic Dark Highland Green (like in the movie). Then there are the subtle chrome accents (around the grille and front windows), 19" wheels, red-painted Brembo brakes and the bespoke front grille. Put it all together and you'll find that the 2019 car does a good job paying tribute to the original. "When making a Bullitt, there are certain things it absolutely must have," added Carl Widmann, Mustang chief engineer. "It has to have the right attitude, it has to be unique in some way from the Mustang GT, and more than anything, it has to be bad ass." Customers are limited to just three factory options, the MagneRide semi-active suspension system, the black leather-trimmed Recaro seats and the Electronics Package, which includes sat-nav, driver memory seats and mirrors, an upgraded sound system and Blind Spot Information with Cross-Traffic Alert. To sum it up, the 475 HP Bullitt Mustang is 8 mph (13 km/h) faster than the 460 HP Mustang GT, has bespoke visuals inside and out and sounds a lot more intimidating. Land Rover's Restoring This Long-Lost Series I Prototype Posted: 14 Jan 2018 01:04 PM PST Land Rover is at a vital crossroads in its history. Not only is it celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, but its core model – the legendary Defender – has been discontinued ahead of the introduction of an completely new model. Sounds like a good time to us to look back and reflect on how far it's come, and that's just what it's doing with the restoration of this vital early prototype. One of 48 pre-production prototypes and three displayed upon the vehicle's debut at the 1948 Amsterdam Motor Show, this Series I model was lost for a long time, but has now been found. The prototypical off-roader (if one could ever be called that) remained in use through the 1960s, after which it sat for 20 years in a field in Wales before being bought as a fixer-upper project... but that project was never completed. Not until it was discovered, oddly enough, just a few miles outside of Solihull – the same place where it was made seven decades prior, and where Land Rover still produces the Discovery and several Range Rover models. With the historical records now retrieved, the team at Jaguar Land Rover Classic will now undertake its restoration, which as you can see will take some work. The process will include reworking the thicker aluminum bodywork, galvanized chassis, and removable rear tub that characterized those 48 pre-production prototypes, while preserving to the greatest extent possible the patina it has accrued over the decades. Buy This NASCAR Racing Truck, Drive It On Public Streets Posted: 14 Jan 2018 12:11 PM PST See this truck? Looks like something you might have seen a dozen years ago in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (now title-sponsored by Camping World), right? Well your eyes do not deceive you. Only this one isn't limited to the super-speedway. It's been converted to run on public streets, and it can be yours – if you place the winning bid. The Chevrolet Silverado racing truck was converted by Magic Customs of Brook Park, Ohio, which fitted it with equipment like a glass windshield, wipers, mirrors, horn, brake lights, and a passenger seat. Most everything else is pretty much as you'd find it on the version that Darrell Waltrip fielded in 2005, right down to the #17 Tide/Downy racing livery. (Or at least it would be if Waltrip hadn't switched to Toyota for the previous season.) Since its conversion, the truck's been driven all of 550 miles in show events. But if you're brave (and lucky) enough, you could take it home from Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale this Friday and drive it as much as you like... or dare. Photo Gallery |
2018 Mercedes-AMG GT Recalled To Untangle Its Seat Belts Posted: 14 Jan 2018 11:26 AM PST Mercedes didn't quite invent the seat belt, but with innovations like the pretensioner and the three-point belt, you might argue that it perfected it. That's why it's surprising to see the German automaker having trouble with the most essential of safety devices – and on one of its flagship models, no less. We're referring, of course, to the Mercedes-AMG GT, 1,263 examples of which from the 2018 model year are being recalled in the United States to fix a problem with the seat belts binding in their guidance loops and leaving slack. The recall includes base, C, S, and R models, which will need to have their seat belt guides reconfigured at their local dealerships. At the same time, Mercedes is also recalling 64 examples of the GLE 550e hybrid crossover to replace their tire-pressure labels. These in addition to the batch of recalls issued just the other day. Toyota Adds Over 600,000 Vehicles To Takata Airbag Recall In The U.S. Posted: 14 Jan 2018 10:46 AM PST Toyota North America is the first automaker to announce the exact models of the expanded Takata airbag recall. The latest list includes an estimated 601,300 units of various 2009-2013 Lexus, Scion, and Toyota cars, whose defective inflators may rupture when the airbag deploys, thus increasing the risk of injury and even death. New additions are the 2009, 2010, and 2013 Scion xB, Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Lexus IS 250/350, and IS-F, 2009 and 2010 Toyota Yaris, and Lexus ES350, 2010 and 2013 Lexus IS 350C/350C, GX460, and Toyota Sienna, and 2010 and 2013 Toyota 4Runner. Owners of these vehicles will be notified by March via first class mail, and dealers will replace either the front passenger airbag inflator or the entire assembly, depending on each case, free of charge. Other automakers, such as Audi, BMW, Daimler Vans, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Subaru and Tesla still have to announce the exact models added to the ever-growing Takata recall recently, but they're expected to do so by the end of January. 2009 – 2010 and 2013 Model Year Scion xB 2009 - 2010 and 2013 Model Year Toyota Corolla 2009 – 2010 and 2013 Model Year Toyota Corolla Matrix 2009 – 2010 Model Year Toyota Yaris 2010 and 2013 Model Year Toyota 4Runner 2013 Model Year Toyota Sienna 2009 – 2010 and 2013 Model Year Lexus IS250/350 2010 and 2013 Model Year Lexus IS250C/350C 2009 – 2010 and 2013 Model Year Lexus IS-F 2009 – 2010 Model Year Lexus ES350 2010 and 2013 Model Year Lexus GX460 Note: 2014 Toyota 4Runner pictured PHOTO GALLERY |
Lexus Drops One Last LF-1 Limitless Teaser Before The Big Reveal Posted: 14 Jan 2018 09:26 AM PST Of all the new concepts that'll be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show this week, one of those we're looking forward to seeing the most is the Lexus LF-1 Limitless. Billed as a "premium flagship crossover," the concept has been the subject of two successive teasers until now, and Lexus has just released yet another. The video is still far from a full reveal, stopping short from showing the overall shape. It does, however, give us a glimpse at some of the show car's details, including the innovative headlights, mesh grille, split-five-spoke wheels, part of the tailgate, and the techy-looking center console controls. From what we can see so far, it looks like it could be a real stunner, even if it is a crossover and not, say, a supercar to succeed the LFA. But then, if recent history (starting with Porsche and the Cayenne) has shown us anything, it's that luxury crossovers are the big sellers bringing in the cash that allow automakers to make the supercars. 2019 Acura RDX: First Photos Of Restyled Luxo SUV Posted: 14 Jan 2018 09:26 AM PST Acura might be calling the 2019 RDX that will premiere in Detroit next week a prototype, but as you can see for yourself in these first official images that surfaced on YouTube, the SUV is 99 percent production ready. At a first look, the only elements that might be toned down a notch or slightly differentiated when the RDX goes on sale later this year as a 2019 model, appear to be the bottom half of the front- and lower part of the rear-bumper, and the door mirrors. Everything else looks normal. The Honda-owned brand vowed a dramatic restyling for the new generation RDX, boldly stating that it represents "the most extensive Acura redesign in more than a decade". We got a conceptual taste of Acura's new (beak-less) design language from the Precision Sports Sedan and Precision Cockpit studies in 2016, with the 2019 RDX being the first model to implement the styling. It definitely has a sportier silhouette and a more sculpted body with more playful detailing on the outside like the (Lexus RX meets Mazda CX-5 and Chevy Bolt) rear quarter window v-point and muscular hood, but it's not like you can't tell it's related to Acura's latest crossovers. Inside, Acura built on the MDX's styling taking it to the next level with more modern and sporty elements for the RDX. These include the round center hub on the redesigned steering wheel and the elevated lower console that slickly connects to the center console that now hosts a standalone screen for the infotainment system controlled by dial and a touchpad below. One thing we'll say is that the Japanese brand doesn't seem to be following the button-less trend seen these days (mainly) on European models. We haven't confirmed the premium compact crossover's powertrains yet, but in all likelihood, we'll see a version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder found in the 2018 Honda Accord 2.0T where it develops 252hp and 273 lb-ft (369 Nm) of torque paired to a ten-speed automatic transmission. A hybrid version could join the range after the regular RDX's market launch. Stay tuned for the official presentation of the 2019 Acura RDX Prototype at the Detroit motor show on Monday. Pickup Rolls Over After Being Hit By Out-Of-Control Sedan Posted: 14 Jan 2018 07:58 AM PST Imagine this: There you are minding your own business and all of a sudden a car comes barreling into you from the opposite side of the road, causing your vehicle to roll over. It's an unfortunate scenario that can have dire consequences, especially on the motorway. There's no info available, but we sincerely hope that no one was seriously hurt in this incident. As for why that Camry stepped out of line in the first place, your guess is as good as ours. As you can see, the saloon was merging onto the motorway when, suddenly, it catapulted to the opposite lane. We have no way of knowing, but unless there was some type of mechanical failure at fault, the driver, for some reason, simply lost control of his vehicle and ended up hitting the pickup truck. Audi's All-Electric E-Tron SUV Will Allegedly Be Unveiled This Fall Posted: 14 Jan 2018 07:01 AM PST Audi may have started taking reservations for the all-new E-Tron SUV, but, according to reports, it won't be revealed until this fall, probably at the Paris Auto Show in October. Ingolstadt's challenger to the likes of the Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace is an important step in the Volkswagen Group's push for electrification, and it also represents Audi's answer to falling diesel sales. Previewed by the concept car shown originally in 2015, the Audi E-Tron SUV is believed to get a more toned down styling for production, similar to that of the upcoming Q6, and to be underpinned by a modified version of the MLB architecture that's also used by the Q5 and Q7. No details about its zero-emission powertrain have been released so far, but the show car had three electric motors that worked together to produce 429hp and more than 800Nm (590lb-ft) of torque, which allowed it to sprint from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in 4.6sec, and up to a top speed electronically limited at 210km/h (131mph). The electric motors will get their juice from a large capacity battery, which should give it a total range of 500km (311 miles) on a single charge. Inside, the Audi E-Tron SUV is believed to offer seating for up to 5 and sport an interior design inspired from the latest A8, with the Virtual Cockpit taking center stage at the front. Finally, just like the flagship saloon, the zero-emission SUV is expected to feature Level 3 autonomous driving capability. PHOTO GALLERY |
Another Lawsuit Over Tesla Model S P85D True Output Surfaces In Norway Posted: 14 Jan 2018 05:59 AM PST The Tesla Model S is becoming somewhat of a controversial car in Norway. The electric automaker is facing another lawsuit in the country, as Model S P85D owners are suing Tesla on the basis of false advertising, reports Dagens Naerlingsliv. Towards the end of 2016, 126 Model S P85D owners in Norway sued Tesla, claiming the electric sedan only produces 469 horsepower instead of the claimed 691 hp. The latest lawsuit, which has 79 plaintiffs, claims that the automaker misrepresented the EV's performance figures. The latest batch of drivers are looking to get the same settlement as the previous owners, which saw each car Model S P85D owner receive 65,000 Norwegian crowns ($7,700) in an out-of-court settlement. Some, though, opted to get a smaller payout in addition to receiving upgrades to their Teslas. "It's the same kind of case that ended up in a compromise the last time," said the plaintiffs' lawyer, Christoffer Falkeid. "It's about the power of the car and the mistakes in marketing and in the sales process, but I do not want to go into amounts." While there's a substantial gap between a car that has 469 hp and one that has 691 hp, there's a simple reason for the discrepancy. As Teslarati points out, the Model S P85D has a dual motor configuration. The front motor is rated by Tesla to make 221 hp, while the back generates 471 hp, giving the electric car a combined rating of 691 hp. Unfortunately for Tesla, in Norway this constitutes false advertising, leading to the lawsuits. The trial will take place at the Oslo District Court in June and is expected to last six days.
