BMW E30 Hillclimber Has E46 M3 Engine Revving To 9,600 RPM

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 04:00 AM PST

When you combine a BMW E30 with a tuned E46 M3 engine revving to 9,600 rpm, the results are truly phenomenal, as this video proves.

This E30 competes in the Lebanese Hillclimb Championship and absolutely dominates the rear-wheel drive class. It's not hard to see why.

Sitting beneath the featherweight bodywork of the 3-Series is the S54 straight-six engine out of the E46 M3. However, this powertrain has been heavily upgraded, destroked, delivers 440 hp and now revs to a mesmerizing 9,600 rpm. It is also one of the best sounding six-cylinders we've ever heard.

Filmed here at a couple of stages during this year's championship, the car looks like the perfect package to fire up twisting roads with pin-point precision. The driver, Naoum Oneissy, is also able to extract the most out of the car by expertly reaching the limits of its grip and staying there.

Jaguar XK180 Concept Replica Will Cost You A Pretty Penny

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 02:49 AM PST

Unless you're a billionaire with close ties to a carmaker, you're unlikely to ever have the opportunity of purchasing a one-off concept. Fortunately, Jaguar enthusiasts can now do the next best thing, buying a Jaguar XK180 recreation.

Jaguar unveiled the eye-popping supercar concept at the 1999 Paris Motor Show as a way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the XK. Sadly, the vehicle never made it to production but that hasn't stopped a company based in the Netherlands from bringing the XK180 back to life.

The company, Autobedrijf de Koning BV, claims to be offering accurate recreations of the XK180, based around the XKR. The car pictured is reportedly the first example built and has a steep 235,000 euro ($272,000) asking price on Mobile.

Based on the images available, the car appears to be almost identical to the real thing and even includes a very similar interior. In fact, we'd probably be fooled into thinking it's the one-off concept if we ever saw one of these clones on the road.

Mercedes-AMG To Test Next Year's F1 Parts In Final Two Races Of 2017 Season

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 01:50 AM PST

Shortly after securing both the 2017 Drivers' and Constructors' championships, Mercedes-AMG Petronas says it will consider the final two races of the year as the start of the 2018 season.

Speaking on the eve of the Brazilian Grand Prix, Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff said the team will experiment new concepts for its 2018 car this weekend and at the season-closer in Abu Dhabi.

"[We have] the first two test opportunities ahead of the new season, trialing new and interesting concepts.

"It might be tempting to think that, with both championships now secure, the pressure is off for the two remaining races of 2017. That couldn't be further from the truth.

"Inside the team, we are looking at the next two race weekends as the first two grands prix of 2018. We have two races that we are determined to win in order to take that positive momentum into the winter," Wolff told Motorsport.

Being in the fortunate position to turn its attention towards the 2018 car will be a huge advantage for Mercedes, particularly since many mid-field teams are still fighting over positions in the constructor championships where a single position gained or lost can translate to tens of millions of dollars less or more in prize money. The fiercest competition will come from Toro Rosso, Renault, and Haas Ferrari, three teams separated by just six points.

Artsy Video Shows Audi RS6 Avant Performance's Brutal Side

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 12:42 AM PST

There may be a new Audi A6 coming our way soon,  together with an even wilder RS6 Avant, but the current iteration still holds its ground.

And we're not even talking about extreme tuned examples we see on the drag strip, but rather a stock RS6 Performance edition, fitted only with an optional Akrapovic exhaust system, from Audi Sport.

Shot in an artsy way by Auditography in Malmo, Sweden, the film showcases the super estate that hides its brutal power from a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, under a super practical and roomy body with elegant lines.

Total output stands at 605PS (597hp) and 750Nm (553lb-ft), which allows it to reach 100km/h (62mph) from a standstill in just 3.7sec. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h (155mph), but it can be lifted to 280km/h (174mph), with the optional dynamic package.

It can do this while claiming to consume an average of 9.6 l/100 km (24.5 US mpg / 29 UK mpg), as estimated by the manufacturer, while emitting 223 g/km of CO2. Not bad for a car that's almost 5 years old, right?

New Mitsubishi Shogun Sport Arriving In UK In 2018

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 11:30 PM PST

Mitsubishi will launch the new Shogun Sport -also known as Pajero Sport- in the UK in spring 2018.

The new seven-seat model, which is already on sale in Asian markets, is based on the same underpinnings with the L200/Triton pickup truck and will be exclusively offered with the 180hp 2.4-liter diesel engine paired to an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission and the firm's Super Select 4WD II system.

Customers will be offered two well-equipped trim levels to choose from, with both featuring leather upholstery, keyless entry with push-button start, LED daytime running lights, Hill Descent Control, Trailer Start Assist, a choice of driving modes depending on the terrain you're driving and smartphone integration.

The range-topper will add things like heated front seats and additional safety features such as Forward Collision Mitigation, Blind Spot Warning and Multi-around Monitor System.

As you might have guessed already by the underpinnings, the new Mitsubishi Shogun Sport will be a more capable off-roader than other similarly priced rivals in the UK market. Similarly-minded rivals include the Ford Everest and the soon-to-be-announced Nissan Navara-based SUV but none of them is available in Europe currently.

Honda Civic, Mazda 3, And Chevy Cruze Batten Down The Hatches

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 04:23 AM PST

These days, the market is filled with all sorts of compact hatchbacks, including the (worldwide) popular Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus .

But what if you wanted to step out of their shadow and go for something different, yet still affordable? Well, then you will have to check out other brands, and in this case, they include Honda, Chevrolet, and Mazda.

The team from RoadShow pinned the new Civic against the Cruze and one of the oldest ones in the segment, the Mazda 3, only to come up with a rather surprising result.

Before giving their verdict, though, the reviewers covered each basic aspect of the three hatchbacks, including their exterior design, cabin space, infotainment, fuel economy and handling.

Arguably, the Mazda 3 came first in most aspects, while the Chevy Cruze was found to be a good, civilized, and quiet urban driver, though consumers won't feel the need to drive it on a twisty road. The newest arrival of the three, which wears Honda's logo, is surprisingly good too, but which one would you choose?

OPEC Says Oil Demand Could Peak In Late 2030s Due To EVs

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 05:26 PM PST

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, otherwise known as OPEC, says that rising sales for electric cars might cause global oil demand to peak and flatten out by the year 2040.

Apparently, if a quarter of the world's cars will run on battery power alone, global oil demand could plateau at roughly 109 million barrels per day in the second half of the 2030s, reports Bloomberg.

Yet, OPEC still expects oil consumption to increase in the following decades as electric cars aren't likely to dethrone their internal combustion counterparts at such a rapid rate, unless a faster-growth scenario occurs.

"It is highly unlikely that electric vehicles will penetrate the passenger car segment with this strength in less than 24 years," stated the recently published report. "Nevertheless, several countries have publicly stated their intention to achieve an even higher share of electric vehicles in new sales."

Oil companies are paying increased attention to markets such as France, the UK and even China, as plans to ban the sale of fossil-fuel burning cars in the next couple of decades have already been announced. OPEC sees only 8% of the global light vehicle fleet running on batteries by 2040, with little impact on oil use, whereas Bloomberg New Energy Finance thinks that a third of cars will be fully-electric by then.

Another tech-movement that could affect oil demand is the mass adoption of car-sharing services, such as those offered by Uber and Lyft. In America, car sharing and ride hailing services could accelerate the decline in oil demand all the way to a 7% drop by the year 2040.

Meanwhile in China, these services could shrink the car fleet and cause oil demand to peak in 2035, before dropping marginally in the next five years.

All You Need To Know About The Chevy Camaro In 10 Minutes

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 04:23 PM PST

The pony car industry has become one of the most exciting segments of the automotive market ever since the Ford Mustang was introduced some 53 years ago.

In the decades since the Mustang hit the road, many brands have tried to emulate the vehicle's success, with varying degrees of success. Of all the Mustang emulators, one car stands out, the Chevrolet Camaro.

To get you up to speed with everything there is to know about the Camaro, Donut Media has published a 10-minute clip tracing the car's history and detailing some of the most important variants built in the last five decades, including the famed Z/28.

Ever since launching, the Camaro has traded blows with the Mustang. However, that all ended in 2002 when Chevrolet pulled the plug on its pony car due to poor sales, effectively crowning the Mustang as the king of all pony cars. Eight years later, Chevrolet relaunched the Camaro with the generation we're most familiar with.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Bugatti Chiron 'Number One' Has A '66 Batmobile Vibe

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 03:18 PM PST

Another Bugatti Chiron is trying to find a new home, and this time, it's legit.

It also seems the person who ordered the car must have been a fan of George Barris' work on the 1966 Batmobile - not that it's a bad thing, as the red accents nicely contrast the murdered-out body on this example.

Registered for the RMSothebys auction in New York City, on December 6, it's the first one ordered for the US market, hence its 'Number One' tag, and it's estimated to sell for $3.5-$4 million.

From the time its assembly was completed in Molsheim, France, it has only been driven for 250 miles (402km), for pure testing purposes, and it hasn't even been registered for road-use in the United States, which is why is condition is described as "new" by the auction house.

Finished in black, with red accents both inside and out, this sinister-looking Bugatti Chiron craves to make its new owner happy every time it will leave the garage, hoping to unleash its 1,479hp (1,500PS) and 1,180lb-ft (1,600Nm) of torque from the stable.

Offered alongside the hypercar to the winning bidder are a number of accessories, such as the 1:8 scale model of this exact unit, aluminum Bugatti crate that contains a leather box with an extra key, speed key, flash drive, car cover, trickle charger, and owner's manuals and reference guide.

So, unless you've already bought a Bugatti Chiron of your own, or lack the necessary funds to do so, what's your excuse for not doing it already?

Watch A BMW 7-Series Hacked Back From The Dead

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 04:22 AM PST

Knowing how expensive it can be to repair badly damaged cars, most insurance company's write-off a car before sending it to a body shop, even if the car has a tiny crack in the frame.

However, there are some cars on the streets which have been crushed and crumpled yet somehow repaired to look brand new. Being well-versed with a hammer and not much else when it comes to working on a car, we've always wondered what it takes to perform such a repair. The video below shows just that.

Posted online by a man named Arthur Tussik, this 20-minute video details the 27-day repair of a BMW 7-Series that came into his shop with extreme damage to the front and side.

Throughout the clip, we see Tussik restore life to the 7-Series like a brain surgeon in an operating theater. From straightening out the BMW's crash structure and somehow re-shaping the crumpled body, Tussik literally gives this 7-Series a new lease on life.

Inevitably, the repaired car isn't as structurally sound as a new car so we wouldn't recommend purchasing a vehicle that's suffered so much damage in a previous life. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see what decades of experience of auto body repair can do.

How Does Volvo's New V90 R Design With 330hp Polestar Pack Perform In The Real World?

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 01:10 PM PST

Designed to upset the German constabulary, the Volvo V90 is one of the most advanced station wagons on the market and, like so many of its rivals, is offered in an array of versions and models.

Jakub and Yuri from The Straight Pipes YouTube channel recently jumped behind the wheel of a particularly seductive V90 R-Design with the power-boosting Polestar Performance Optimization package to see what all the fuss is about.

The R-Design trim is unique from any standard V90 as it adds numerous styling and interior tweaks but doesn't look to improve the vehicle's performance, despite what the 'R' badge might suggest. In the U.S., the R-Design package can be grafted on to both the T5 and T6 all-wheel drive models and certainly looks the part.

What does improve performance is the optional Polestar package that increases output by 14hp on the 2.0-liter twin-charged four T6 that's reviewed here, from 316hp to 330hp. This is combined with other changes to offer faster throttle, gear and engine response.

No matter what powertrain a customer selects, all V90 models come equipped with what Volvo believes is the most advanced standard safety package on the market. Some of these key standard features are Adaptive Cruise Control, Pilot Assist II, Distance Alert, Lane Keeping Aid, Driver Alert Control, Road Sign Information, Lane Departure Warning, Run-off Road Protection, and large animal detection.

Unlike the freely available crossover-ish, high-riding V90 Cross Country, the plain V90 is offered only as a custom-order vehicle in the U.S. Prices start from $49,950 for the 250hp, FWD T5 and from $55,950 for the 316hp, AWD T6 V90, both in R-Design specification.

Your Car's Dash Could Look Like This In The Near Future

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 12:05 PM PST

The second our cars gain the ability to drive all by themselves, the need for a traditional dashboard will go away.

It's been said before that future cars will be more media-focused inside, rather than focused on functionality, since there will be no need for them to have physical buttons and switches.

This means that the gauge cluster will most likely join with the main display to form a large screen for media, navigation, settings and so on. Mercedes is already toying with the idea, even though their format is still a traditional one with gauges in front of the driver.

Now, what you're looking at in these images, is the MIRi UX by one Jason Kim. As you can see, the main display is one gigantic piece, seamlessly split in multiple sections.

For example, on the left (apparently it's a LHD car), you've got your speed indicator, odometer, range, route guidance and cruise control settings, plus whatever song you happen to be listening to. To the right of that is a large map that occupies the same space as the media section where you can watch your favorite TV show.

As for the other side of the giant display, that seems to be the "app drawer", where you can check out your social media, download more apps, use the phone and more. Finally, beneath everything there's a smaller screen that features climate control functions, a possibly physical hazard lights button and other important information.

Interestingly, the date on the display says June 26, 2024, which is probably hopeful thinking for this type of advanced technology.

You Can Now Get A Porsche 911 R For Under $400k; Is The Bubble Bursting?

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 11:02 AM PST

In the months following the Porsche 911 R's premiere at 2016's Geneva Motor Show, prices for the limited-run sports car skyrocketed.

From the factory, U.S. customers had to part with at least $185,950 for the 911 R. In mid-to-late-2016 prices for used examples edged towards the $1 million mark. But, as many expected, such prices weren't sustainable and it appears as though the bubble just might be starting to burst.

We recently stumbled upon two examples, including a beautiful black and red 2016 Porsche 911 R for sale in California from iLusso with an asking price of $428,900. While that's still a huge premium over the sports car's original sales price, it's about 30 per cent less than some examples have traded hands for.

Beyond the paint finish, this 911 R will prove enticing to prospective buyers as it has just 140 miles (225 km) on the odometer, effectively making it brand new.

Too pricey? Then how about the white and red example with only 80 miles on the odo from Porsche of South Shore in NY that's listed for $389,900? That's actually the cheapest out of the 10 models we found on Autotrader, with the most expensive listed at $479,991. Just this past July, out of the 3-4 911 Rs on the same site, the lowest asking price was $470,000.

One possible reason for slightly declining 911 R values is the launch of the 2018 Porsche 911 GT3, now available with a six-speed manual, a car apparently better than the R and roughly $40,000 less from new.

It remains to be seen where 911 R prices will settle in the coming two years but we wouldn't be surprised to see values fall to the low or perhaps even under the $300,000 range. In 20 or 30 years, they may creep into the seven-figure mark, depending partly on how future collectors view the vehicle's significance.

Driving The Honda NSX, Toyota Supra And Mazda RX-7 Back-To-Back

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 10:03 AM PST

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, many of Japan's leading automakers built world-beating sports cars that were exceptionally fast, bewilderingly agile and in many ways, ahead of their European and American rivals.

Of all the iconic Japanese sports cars of the time, the first-generation Honda NSX, FD Mazda RX-7 and A80 Toyota Supra are among the most beloved. One fortunate YouTuber had the chance to jump behind the wheel of all three.

Despite all coming from Japan at roughly the same time, the Supra, NSX and RX-7 are all quite different from each other. Whereas the Supra is a straight-line warrior, the RX-7 is a more nimble and agile sports car powered by a high-revving rotary engine. By comparison, the NSX is the most exotic of the three, the only one that's naturally-aspirated and the only one with its engine mounted behind passenger compartment.

If money wasn't an issue and you could only buy one of the three, which would you choose?

America's 10 Best-Selling Sedans Of 2017

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 10:33 AM PST

If you're willing to ignore trucks and crossovers, which are casting really large shadows over saloons these days, the best selling cars in the U.S. this year are models that have four doors and are either brand new or have been updated.

Recently, Lexus went as far as to say that sedans will go away completely unless they evolve into something more dynamic, something that's less about family vacations and more performance oriented.

"Unless we can really offer a sedan experience you cannot have with an SUV or crossover, I think the sedan may not be able to survive if it does not evolve," said Toyota branding chief, Tokuo Fukuichi.

In spite of all that, the good old sedan isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and models like the ones you're about to see are still putting up a fight in the sales charts through October, 2017, as reported by The Motley Fool.

#10 - Chevrolet Malibu

Chevy launched their redesigned Malibu last year, boasting sleek styling, a roomy and well-put together interior and improved fuel economy figures. It's also a very safe car, with available systems such as Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

While it did really well at first, the Malibu has been on a decline this year, with sales being down 16.5% compared to how things stood last year. Still, the Malibu remains a good earner for General Motors.

#9 - Hyundai Elantra

Unlike previous iterations, the latest Elantra is a solid overall choice for people looking for a compact companion that offers great value for money. It's roomy, rides well and has a lot of modern safety tech, like Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Lane Change Assist.

Like with the Malibu, Elantra sales have also dipped in 2017, down 8.8% compared to last year.

#8 - Chevrolet Cruze

The Chevy Cruze has proved extremely popular since its complete redesign in 2016. It's hard to find a review where somebody isn't praising it for its efficiency, value and interior features.

We sampled the 2016 Cruze and found that it strikes a good balance between a Honda Civic and a Hyundai Elantra. Actually, the Cruze has been doing so well as of late, sales are up 3.4% this year through October.

#7 - Ford Fusion

The tech-savvy Ford Fusion is a good car and very few have claimed otherwise. This latest iteration even features a dynamic Sport version that boasts continuously controlled damping and a pothole detection system, to go with larger intakes, 19" wheels, quad pipes, the works.

You can also get it as a hybrid, which is a huge plus nowadays. However, you might be shocked to learn that sales for the Fusion have gone down by 22.6% this year, and that's a pretty big number.

#6 - Nissan Sentra

Nissan have been aggressive in making sure the Sentra is a success. Despite some reviews finding it somewhat cramped and noisy, the Japanese automaker is offering good discounts in order to move these cars.

Because of that, Sentra sales have gone up 0.2% through October 2017, making this 4-door compact one of the best-selling sedans in the US.

#5 - Nissan Altima

While the Altima comes in at a very respectable 5th place, sales this year are down 17.1% through October as Nissan are having a rough time talking people into buying this model over something else.

It's still a spacious car with good fuel economy, but it does appear as though it may be losing the "popular vote" in the grand scheme of things.

#4 - Honda Accord

The mid-size saloon sub-segment has shrunk by 15% in the first nine months of 2017, but that's not necessarily a bad thing for a car that's as popular as the Honda Accord.

For 2018, the Accord is sportier than ever, featuring modern connectivity options, solid build quality and plenty of room inside for all passengers. It's a true family car and people are still finding it to their liking. As for sales, they're down 2.3% through October, but the new model should help fix that soon.

#3 - Toyota Corolla Sedan

The Corolla is of course one of the world's best-selling cars and it almost seems like that's always going to be the case. Yet, despite its top-notch reliability and competitive pricing, sales are down 9% this year.

It's also not the best looking car in the world, which is something Toyota themselves admit is a problem.

#2 - Toyota Camry

Ah, the Camry. You didn't actually think it wasn't going to make the list did you?

With an all-new and critically acclaimed model already out, Toyota can finally start filling the hole dug by the previous-generation Camry, which didn't register particularly strong sales (for a Camry) towards the end of its term.

By the way, the 2018 Camry is the first sedan launched by Toyota after Akio Toyoda himself stated that there will be "no more boring cars," as far as his company is concerned. Calling this the best-looking Camry in history would not be an understatement.

#1 - Honda Civic Sedan

The Civic was a sales beast last year and it's a beast this year as well, posting a 1.5% increase through October.

This is the best-selling car in the U.S. that's not a pickup or a crossover, and figuring out why is pretty much a no-brainer. The Civic has always been immensely popular, and this latest iteration is roomier, more powerful and much better to look at.

Also, it may be too early to talk long-term value, but the Civic has always been affordable, dependable and relatively fun to drive compared to most of its direct rivals. It has pretty much everything going for it.

This Cruze Thinks It's A Mercedes-Benz AMG

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 10:33 AM PST

Mercedes-Benz has just launched a new model exclusive to the Australian market, based on the popular Holden / Chevy Cruze.

As these images show, the compact five-door sedan includes all the characteristic traits of a genuine Mercedes model, including a front grille with the three-pointed star, LED daytime running lights, sporty wheels, typical Mercedes taillights and badges on the rear reading 'CLK55' and 'AMG'.

Eat your heart out upcoming A-Class Sedan, this is what Mercedes buyers Down Under want.

Sarcasm aside, we came across the photos of this customized Holden Cruze from Melbourne on Facebook. Evidently, its owner has had some fun making it look like a Mercedes-Benz, and as much as it pains us to say, some people actually think this is a genuine Mercedes.

Don't believe us? Check out some of the comments on the Facebook post below.

Murdered-Out Rolls-Royce Wraith Keeps The Party On The Inside

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 07:00 AM PST

Rolls-Royces typically leave the factory with more bling than the Player's Ball. This one, however, takes a decidedly different approach.

The Wraith you see before you has been all murdered out in black. The bodywork, trim, grille, hood ornament... everything's been blacked out.

Inside it's another story, though: the cabin is trimmed out in bright orange leather, with the starlight headliner and piano-lacquer trim.

Plus as it looks, though, we can't help but wonder what the upsized rolling stock has done to the plushy ride for which a Rolls is known. Forgiato fitted a set of its Tec 3.1 wheels, installed here in massive 24-inch diameter, with those self-centering hubs and ultra-low-profile Pirelli P Zero Nero rubber. Like the rest of the exterior treatment, though, they're blacked out, too.

New Lexus LS 600h Is Jam-Packed With Driving Assistance Systems

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 05:57 AM PST

If you're building a luxury car to compete with the likes of the BMW 7-Series, Mercedes S-Class and Audi A8, you best fit it with the latest in active safety technology, or risk falling behind.

Lexus knew this all too well while planning their all-new LS saloon, and the end product seems to be pretty future-proof, especially on Japanese roads where you can test out systems like automatic lane-change.

As Carwow's Mat Watson demonstrates here, the LS is quite good at keeping you and others around you safe, during low speed maneuvers as well as in regular driving scenarios, where the driving assistance systems can take over.

Watson does point out that while the car is able to execute the lane-changing maneuvers safely, the system doesn't look quite bullet proof. Then again, it's not like there are any fully autonomous cars out there in the first place.

Another issue he experienced was with the Driver Emergency Stop Assist, a system that is supposed to bring the car to a halt safely if it senses that the driver is incapacitated in any way. Unfortunately, in this instance, the system disengaged before the car came to a complete stop.

Fast And Furious Bus Driver Has Close Call With Tram

Posted: 11 Nov 2017 04:58 AM PST

It's not the scene of a new Fast and Furious movie stunt, but a very risky maneuver pulled by a bus driver in Bucharest, Romania, earlier this week.

The reckless driver can be seen traveling on the tramlines, nearly missing a tram that was coming from the opposite way, while overtaking - you guessed it, another tram.

The alleged attempt to beat rush hour traffic could have led to some serious consequences, and what's more surprising is that the bus is owned by the Romanian Ministry of Internal Affairs, being assigned to the constabulary.

Since the incident has caused a stir after it was presented by the local news bulletins, the driver has been identified, and the local media says that legal measures will be taken against him, for reckless driving, illegal overtaking, and jeopardizing the lives of bystanders. Additionally, he could also lose his job, besides his driving license.

This is the second incident reported this week involving a bus, with the previous showing a vehicle engulfed in flames, somewhere in Russia, driving down the road as if nothing had happened. Luckily, nobody was injured in either case.
