Renntech's Mercedes-AMG GT R Is Unleashed With 761HP

Posted: 13 Nov 2017 04:30 AM PST

Known usually as 'The Beast of the Green Hell' thanks to Mercedes-AMG's clever marketing campaign, this GT R has been turned into the 'Orange Beast' by tuning company Renntech.

And we're not even talking about finishing it in orange and calling it a day, but also fitting it with BOV adapters, high-flow air filters, an ECU upgrade, and Stage II upgraded turbochargers.

When you add everything up, this Mercedes-AMG GT R is now good for 761hp (772PS) and 632lb-ft (857Nm) of torque, compared to the stock model that makes 577hp (585PS) and 516lb-ft (700Nm) of torque.

The tuner claims that the 0 to 60mph (96km/h) sprint takes just 3.0 seconds, an 0.5sec improvement, and the quarter mile is done in 10.7sec, at 136mph (219km/h), on a regular road surface, with the car sitting on the OEM Michelin Cup Sport 2 tires.

Renntech haven't released any pricing details in the short text that accompanies the images, but owners of the Mercedes-AMG GT R, which can be had from an MSRP of $157,000 in the US, should find out how much they will have to spend on this aftermarket upgrade by contacting the tuner.

Rolls-Royce's Upcoming SUV Won't Look Like This, But Maybe It Should

Posted: 13 Nov 2017 04:02 AM PST

Rolls-Royce has been very clear that its forthcoming crossover won't be an SUV. Elegant, sure. Sporty... er, maybe. But certainly not utilitarian.

An "all-terrain, high-sided vehicle" is what they're calling it over in Goodwood. But what if it were a real utility vehicle?

Then it might look something a little like this. A lot like this, if we were so fortunate. It's called the Rolls-Royce Haunt, in keeping with the marque's ghostly naming scheme. Only it doesn't actually exist. It's a rendering from Brazilian designer Kleber Silva.

As you can see, the design calls for a four-door, short-bed pickup truck – not unlike, say, the Lamborghini LM002 or a Hummer H2 SUT... only not quite that utilitarian, and with distinctly Rolls-Royce design traits.

It has a "pantheon" grille, Spirit of Ecstasy hood ornament, suicide rear doors, two-tone paintjob... just how we'd expect a Rolls-Royce truck to look, if ever the ultra-lux automaker were to make one. And looking at it, we can't help but wonder if it should.

Maybe then you'd see owners taking their Rollses hunting (or hawking) like they used to, instead of having to "slum it" in a Range Rover or Bentley Bentayga.

Holden Brings The Equinox To Australia

Posted: 13 Nov 2017 03:25 AM PST

Holden, in case you haven't noticed, doesn't manufacture automobiles anymore. It just brings in other GM products from elsewhere and sells them in Australia with lion badges on the nose. And the latest is the Equinox.

Sold as a Chevrolet in America, the Equinox has now arrived Down Under as a Holden, offered in an array of trims and specifications ranging from $27,990 all the way up to $46,290 (in Australian dollars).

That's a big range,  spread across a staggering escalation of six trim levels, separated by equipment levels and powertrain options. The base model comes with a 1.5-liter turbo four mated to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. The larger 2.0-liter turbo engine pairs with a nine-speed automatic, and there'll be a 1.6-liter diesel arriving next year (following the gasoline models that roll out next month).

Adaptive all-wheel drive is available on the penultimate LTZ model, and comes standard on the top LTZ-V. US pricing, in case you're wondering, similarly starts at $26,505 (USD), but tops out at $38,225 for the top-of-the-line Premier model in America – where the Chevrolet division has to be careful not to encroach on upscale Buick and Cadillac territory.

Though classified as a compact SUV in the US, Holden terms the Equinox as a mid-size in Australia. Either way, you're looking at essentially the same vehicle, with as much as 1798 liters (63.5 cubic feet) of cargo space inside (with the rear seats folded flat).

Indian Scout FTR1200 Custom Was Possibly The Coolest Bike At EICMA

Posted: 13 Nov 2017 02:53 AM PST

The two-wheel equivalent of the Geneva, Tokyo, and Detroit auto shows rolled all into one, the EICMA motorcycle show never fails to bring out the coolest bikes the world has ever seen.

This year's has proven no exception to that rule. And this, to our eyes, looks like the coolest of them all. Shame you can't have one.

It's the Indian Scout FTR1200 Custom, a tribute on wheels to flat-track competition – specifically the Wrecking Crew, as Indian's racing team is known.

The showpiece is built around the Scout's 1133-cc V-twin (that's a 1.1-liter two-cylinder engine, in automotive terms), kicking out over 100 horsepower. But everything else is, as the name suggests, custom.

Taking its inspiration from the championship-winning FTR750 (but with a much bigger engine), the FTR1200 Custom features a 4130 chromoly steel trellis frame and rear swingarm, with carbon-fiber bodywork, LED lighting, a fully adjustable Ohlins suspension, RSD Traction race wheels with Dunlop dirt track tires, and Brembo brakes.

And as you can tell, it looks serious. Dead serious. Shame it's just a concept – albeit one that's going on a world tour after EICMA.

Porsche 911 GT2 RS Looks Stunning In British Racing Green

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 06:12 PM PST

In case its blistering Nurburgring lap time hadn't already made you fall in love with the new 2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS, this particularly special example may convince you of the car's greatness.

Recently delivered in Nuremberg, Germany, this GT2 RS benefits from the firm's Paint to Sample programme and is finished in British Racing Green, without a doubt one of the most evocative car colors on earth.

Like the original silver show car, the owner of this car also opted for the stunning matte gold wheels which work beautifully with the paint scheme. The desirable Weissach Package has also been specified, as evidenced by the two sections of exposed carbon fiber on the hood.

As deliveries of the new GT2 RS continue around the world, we're looking forward to seeing more unique examples hitting the streets.

Could This Be The Kia Of The Future?

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 05:03 PM PST

At the start of 2015, Mercedes-Benz introduced its eye-catching F 015 Luxury in Motion, a concept which it believes accurately depicts the car of the future.

Utilizing an electric powertrain, the Luxury in Motion was able to have incredibly short front and rear overhangs and a spacious interior. Perhaps inspired by this futuristic concept, Behance artist Aaron Jaryong Koo has designed a similar car, this time from Kia.

Simply dubbed the Kia Autonomous family van, the vehicle sets out to achieve exactly what its name indicates. As such, it has been designed with an interior as spacious as that of the Kia Sedona, despite being over 60 cm shorter.

As the concept is fully-autonomous, there's no need to waste space with a traditional dashboard or steering wheel. Consequently, the concept's interior consists of two large seats facing each other and a large bench seat to the side which could act as the perfect place to rest a child.

Upon revealing the F 015 Luxury in Motion, Mercedes-Benz indicated such a vehicle may see the light of day in 2030. If that estimate proves accurate, we could see vehicles like the Mercedes and this Kia on public roads in just over a decade.

This Modified BMW E9 CS Will Blow Your Mind

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 04:02 PM PST

Although the SEMA Show is typically flooded with tuning projects from the aftermarket's leading companies, dozens of enthusiastic owners also bring their custom-built rides to the show and often, they're the real head turners.

While attending this year's event, Car Throttle had the opportunity to check out a modified BMW E9 CS. Be warned, you may have to carefully pick your jaw up from the floor after watching this video.

Everything from the bodywork to the powertrain of this E9 has been overhauled, starting with the engine. In place of the 1960-spec mill is the straight-six of the BMW E36 M3, an engine which produced about 240 hp from factory when sold in the U.S. Not satisfied with such power, the owner slapped on a huge turbocharged and mated the engine to an E36 transmission.

The bodywork of the car is also particularly amazing. There is a selection of new fiberglass panels, including rear wheel arches, which now make the E9 about 7-feet wide. There's also a set of BBS centerlock wheels. Unbelievably, they are 15.5-inches wide at the rear!

Beauty Like This Jaguar C-Type Doesn't Come Cheap

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 02:55 PM PST

The British have made some achingly beautiful (and supremely fast) cars over the years, but few could hold a candle to the Jaguar C-Type.

The competition version of the XK120 roadster, the C-Type is the machine that propelled Jaguar to its first two Le Mans wins.

Jaguar would go on to build 53 C-Types, with the majority going to privateer racers in the United States. This is believed to have been the first of them, and racked up racing credentials all its own.

Chassis number XKC 007 was delivered in 1952 to Charles Hornburg, Jaguar's West Coast distributor. But rather than sell it, Hornburg kept the car to showcase what the British automaker was capable of.

In September of that year, Phil Hill drove it from California to Wisconsin, entered it in the SCCA National race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, and took first place. The car went on to compete in various other events across America, and scored more podium finishes before being consigned to a string of private collectors.

Beautifully restored and highly sought-after, this C-Type is going up for auction less than a month from now in New York, where it's expected to sell for $5.5-7 million. That'll put it well out of reach for most of us, but we can at least admire it from afar in these photos taken by Ryan Merrill for RM Sotheby's.

Nissan's Offering More Midnight Editions In 2018 Than Ever Before

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 02:02 PM PST

Nissan found a winner with its Midnight Editions. In fact, the manufacturer says that out of those models offered with the package, about a third sell with it specified – and about 80 percent of Maxima SRs.

With that kind of demand, it should come as no surprise that the Japanese automaker is extending the Midnight Edition, not only for another model year, but to new models as well.

For 2018, Nissan is offering all its pickups with the murdered-out treatment, including the Frontier, Titan, and Titan XD.

The Frontier Midnight Edition is offered in Crew Cab form with the automatic transmission and either two- or four-wheel drive. It comes with 18-inch alloys, grille, step rails, mirror caps, door handles, and badging all blacked out, along with body-colored bumpers.

The Midnight Titan and Titan XD also get black mirror caps, door handles, step rails, and badges, along with black fog light surrounds, fender louvers (on the XD), and 20-inch wheels. The bumpers are similarly body colored, as is the grille with a dark insert. The package is available on the SV and SL trim levels of either the Titan or Titan XD, with the Crew Cab and either two- or four-wheel drive.

If pickups aren't your thing, Nissan's still offering the Midnight Edition treatment on the Sentra SR ($495), Altima SR ($1,095), Maxima SR ($1,195), Rogue SV ($1,095), Murano Platinum (pricing TBA), and Pathfinder SL ($1,395).

Pricing has yet to be announced for the Titans, but the new Frontier Midnight Edition commands a $995 premium. Equipment levels vary as well from one model to the other, but the manufacturer asserts that the packages represent an average 45-percent savings over specifying the same equipment separately.

You don't have to order yours in black, either: while the trim is all murdered out, the bodywork can be ordered in white or gunmetal grey, too.

Up For Sale: One Brazilian Grand Prix Racing Circuit

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 01:04 PM PST

We see cars listed for sale all the time. Even the occasional F1 car. A world-famous grand prix racing circuit, on the other hand, is another matter entirely. But that's just what's come up on the market.

According to Autosport, the city of Sao Paulo in Brazil is looking to sell the Autódromo José Carlos Pace at Interlagos.

The circuit first hosted the Brazilian Grand Prix in 1972, and after a few years of alternating with the Jacarepaguá circuit (now known as the Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet) near Rio de Janeiro, has served as the permanent home of the Formula One race since 1990 – right up to this weekend's race.

The facility, with its 15-turn, 2.7-mile grand prix track, opened in 1940 as the Autódromo de Interlagos, and also hosts the 6 Hours of Sao Paulo for the FIA World Endurance Championship, among other events.

Economic considerations have reportedly prompted the city to put the track up for sale. Three parties from within Brazil and abroad are reportedly in contention to buy the complex, among them former F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone. Among his other holdings, Ecclestone also owns the Circuit Paul Ricard in the South of France.

Until the deal is signed, though, it's all up in the air. So if you've ever dreamed of owning your own grand-prix racing circuit, now could be your chance.

Citroën's New C3 R5 Would Make An Awesome Hot Hatch

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 12:09 PM PST

This is Citroën's latest rally car. With the French automaker's considerable expertise behind it, it's bound to win a rally or two. But that's not why it's caught our attention.

What we're looking at is the first image of the Citroën C3 R5, a downgraded customer version of the one that the Chevron marque runs in the World Rally Championship.

Still in the thick of its development, the C3 R5 is set to debut later this month at the Rallye du Var that forms part of the French Rally Championship – driven by one Yoann Bonato, who has already sealed up the title with four wins this season. Since the C3 R5 has not yet been finalized and homologated, it'll run as a "zero" car, clearing the way for the competitors to follow.

That's all well and fine, but the reason it's caught our attention is because it looks like it would make for one heck of a hot hatch – sans the race livery and maybe some of the more extreme aero elements and bodywork modifications.

Why the R5 and not the existing WRC version, you ask? Because R5 rally cars like this one are much closer to production spec than their top-tier counterparts. Tone it down a little more and it'd make a serious rival to the likes of the Volkswagen Polo GTI, Renault Clio RS, Ford Fiesta ST, and Toyota Yaris GRMN.

The question is whether Citroën and its parents at the PSA Group (with their cash and attention all tied up in Opel at the moment) will see what we see and put just such a beast on the road. One can only hope.

Maybach S650 Not Enough? Check Out The New Brabus 900

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 10:55 AM PST

Mercedes recently upgraded its top-of-the-line Maybach S-Class sedan with the twin-turbo V12 from the AMG S65, giving the big limousine all the power and torque that you could ask for. Still, there are some who may want even more. And for those individuals, there's Brabus.

The Benz tuner extraordinaire has released a new series of modifications for the updated S-Class, chief among them the Maybach S650 – which Brabus has cranked up to 888 horsepower.

To get there, Brabus bored out the engine from 6.0 liters to 6.3 and fitted new turbochargers, crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, and exhaust system. To go with the engine enhancements, it's also offering a full array of visual and aerodynamic upgrades, as well as an interior customized to the buyer's taste.

The headline figure here, though, is a 0-62 time of just 3.7 seconds (limited largely by the traction of the rear driven wheels) and a top speed in excess of 217 miles per hour. Not bad for a sedan weighing the better part of three tons.

Brabus will apply the same upgrades to the "standard" S600 and the AMG S65 which share the same engine architecture. But if that all seems like too much to handle, it's also released performance upgrades for the (relatively) smaller engines on offer. It'll tune the S560 up to 650 hp and the AMG S63 to 691 hp. With four-wheel traction (and a lighter engine), we wouldn't be surprised to see the latter version achieve even more impressive performance.

Mercedes F1 Staff Robbed At Gunpoint In Brazil, Hamilton Says It Happens Every Year

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 09:59 AM PST

A potentially deadly encounter ended without incident on Saturday when members of the Mercedes-AMG F1 team were robbed at gunpoint in Brazil.

Autosport reports that robbers stopped a van carrying members of the team from the Interlagos circuit where the Brazilian Grand Prix is being held this weekend.

The team's star driver Lewis Hamilton revealed that shots were fired, and a gun even held to one team member's head. Fortunately while valuables were reportedly stolen, no one was physically harmed in the incident.

The van was reportedly traveling in a convoy together with members of the Williams team and FIA officials, but the other vehicles managed to flee the scene when traffic cleared.

"This happens every single year here," Hamilton tweeted. "F1 and the teams need to do more, there's no excuse!"

The most prominent of these incidents occurred in 2010 when robbers tried to hijack Jenson Button's car as he left the track. Button drove alongside Hamilton that year at McLaren, having won the championship the year before with the Brawn GP team subsequently acquired by Mercedes.

2019 Corvette ZR1 Unveiled With 755 HP, 210+ MPH Top Speed

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 10:40 AM PST

Chevrolet has unveiled the highly-anticipated 2019 Corvette ZR1.

Billed as the fastest and most powerful Corvette ever created, the ZR1 features a supercharged 6.2-liter LT5 V8 engine that produces 755 hp (563 kW) and 715 lb-ft (968 Nm) of torque. It can be paired to either a seven-speed manual or an optional eight-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet didn't go into specifics but confirmed the model has a top speed in excess of 210 mph (337 km/h).

In order to hit these impressive speeds, the car has been equipped with an all-new front fascia and a "downforce-enhancing front underwing." The model also features a unique carbon-fiber "halo" hood and four new radiators.

Two different aerodynamic styling packages will be available and the standard "Low Wing" variant is designed to deliver the highest top speed. It enables the ZR1 to generate up to 70 percent more downforce than the Z06's base aero package.

The optional ZTK Performance Package goes even further as it adds a front splitter and an adjustable "High Wing" that provides an estimated 950 pounds (430 kg) of downforce. The package also includes Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 summer tires, chassis modifications, and a retuned Magnetic Ride Control system that promises to deliver even greater cornering grip.

Speaking of options, Chevrolet will offer a Sebring Orange Design Package that includes a Sebring Orange exterior with orange brake calipers and orange accents. The package also includes orange seat belts, orange contrast stitching, and bronze aluminum interior trim.

The interior can also be equipped with an assortment of other options including heated and ventilated Napa leather upholstery, a carbon fiber rimmed steering wheel, a Bose premium audio system, and a Performance Data Recorder.

The 2019 Corvette ZR1 will go on sale next spring and pricing will be announced closer to launch.

2018 BMW X3: First Impressions In, M40i Corners Like A Champ

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 08:57 AM PST

On paper, the third-generation BMW X3 has plenty going for it, and with the higher-performance M40i leading the pack, it should give Audi SQ5 buyers pause.

A sportier than ever X3 should also prove equipped at challenging other driver-focused crossovers such as the Porsche Macan or the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, although there's a lot more to the X3 than just improved driving dynamics.

Inside, BMW's improvements become quickly obvious. Its larger wheelbase allows for more room, while its quality and tech-ridden cabin is said to be among the top in the segment.

Of course, if you're mostly interested in seeing the all-new 2018 X3 at its best, you'll probably want to go for the M40i version, the first-ever M Performance model to be featured in the X3's lineup. It seems like every single person who's driven it thus far has come away impressed - or at least those who expressed their opinions on YouTube have. It's the most fun to drive, the engine is engaging and it's reported to be really good on the twisty bits.

The M40i puts down 360 PS (355 HP) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque, which gets you from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.8 seconds. That's what you might call "in-your-face fast", seen as how the Audi SQ5 needs 5.4 seconds with similar power and torque figures. The X3 M40i is also quicker on paper than the Porsche Macan GTS (also 360 PS / 500 Nm) and the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 (367 PS / 520 Nm), although some reviewers did mention how the X3 doesn't quite feel as agile as the Macan overall.

As for other models in the new X3's range, there were plenty of positives mentioned for the 20d xDrive and 30d xDrive models as well, the latter proving quite capable when accelerating in a straight line thanks to its 265 PS (261 HP) and 620 Nm (457 lb-ft) of torque, enough for a 5.8 seconds sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph).

In the end, the general consensus is that the new BMW X3 manages to build on what the old model was all about, in the sense that it's bigger and better, which is a good starting point in a segment as competitive as this.

Renault Subtil Study Is A Transformable Pickup And SUV From The Far Future

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 08:02 AM PST

The Renault Subtil was drawn to bridge the gap between SUVs and pickup trucks in the world of tomorrow.

Unfortunately, Renault isn't planning on building this thing anytime soon. What you're looking at is a rendering by artist Wojciech Jurkowski. In his own words, the Subtil is meant to give city folk the chance to "look for peaceful, quiet places among mountains and rivers," and spend time "sightseeing or doing sports in the fresh air."

If you look at the blueprints, you'll see that the Subtil automatically converts from an SUV to a pickup, with various configurations available. It was designed to be transformed from a 4 seater with a standard luggage compartment, to a two-seater with a large luggage compartment and a two-seater with space for sports equipment (like a bike or a snowmobile). You can also put the car in autopilot mode and convert the interior into a bedroom.

The designer says you can setup the cabin in any way you want, while thanks to the car's 360 camera system, you can use VR 3D glasses to check out the surrounding scenery.

As for what's powering this concept, it's 4 independent electric motors located inside the wheels, which makes sense for this type of vehicle.

All together, the Renault Subtil sounds like a very efficient and advanced means of transportation. However, we don't see it going off-road - it basically has no ground clearance, no thanks to those massive wheel covers.

2018 Honda Civic Type R Chases Down Porsches On The 'Ring

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 06:56 AM PST

Even though the new Honda Civic Type R holds the front-wheel drive production car record at the Nurburgring, owners shouldn't expect to match the car's 7 min 43.8 sec lap just by jumping behind the wheel.

Nevertheless, French car magazine L'Argus recently took to the iconic German circuit and performed an extremely impressive lap, tackling the track's most difficult sections with poise and control.

While we've yet to drive the new Type R, we've heard it is a significant improvement over the short-lived FK2-generation model, particularly because of its overhauled suspension system.

Thanks to the hot hatch's balanced chassis and the absence of any torque steer, it looks right at home at 'Green Hell'. In fact, the driver comfortably passes a Lotus Exige S, Porsche 911 GT3, 911 GT3 RS, and a handful of Renault Sport models.

Powering the new Civic Type R is a turbocharged 2.0-liter VTEC engine with 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels exclusively through a slick six-speed manual transmission.

Brabus Shows Off More Of 4x4² Adventure, In Case Anyone Missed It

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 05:58 AM PST

Over the years, Mercedes-Benz have managed to transform the G-Class from a no-nonsense all-terrain vehicle, to something that's more of a cultural icon/fashion statement.

In their efforts, they went from AMG-powered models, all the way to something like the G63 AMG 6x6, a six-wheeled beast that might as well live on Mars than somewhere with an infrastructure.

Their latest creation however was slightly more sensible than the 6x6, yet still bonkers in its own right. We're talking of course about the G500 4x4², powered by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, good for 422 PS and 610 Nm (450 lb-ft).

Earlier this year in Geneva, Brabus also launched the G550 Adventure, an even more rugged version of the regular G500 4x4², with more power and even more off-roading ability.

The G550 Adventure puts down 550 PS (542 HP) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft), enough to take this three tonne SUV from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.7 seconds.

It's also got underbody protection, a winch, hood scoop, extra lighting units and an electronically adjustable suspension - pretty much everything you'd need if you were a Jurassic World employee.

Is $150,000 Too Much To Pay For A Ferrari (Book)?

Posted: 12 Nov 2017 04:57 AM PST

These days if you want to get yourself behind the wheel of a new Ferrari, you'll be looking at a good $200k. More if you want it now, maybe less if you're willing to buy second-hand.

In that context, $150,000 doesn't seem like an awful lot to pay. But as you can see, this isn't a Ferrari automobile. It's a Ferrari book.

Or rather a book about Ferrari, we should say. It's the product of UK-based Kraken Opus, which publishes high-end tomes for those wealthy enough to afford them.

The publisher came out with The Official Ferrari Opus in 2011, with 852 twenty-square-inch pages to weigh a total of over 80 pounds. The book was offered in several versions, ranging from the Classic edition (for "only" $4,100) to the Diamante edition you see here.

The top edition featured a red leather binding with a diamond-encrusted Prancing Horse emblem on the over, placed in a carbon-fiber clamshell case, and hand-signed by the Scuderia's drivers and the company's chairman at the time: Fernando Alonso, Felipe Massa, and Luca di Montezemolo. It even came with a set of white gloves with which to handle the pages.

Where the penultimate, $37,500 Enzo edition yielded 400 copies, the Diamante edition was limited to just one per country. That'd make for fewer than 200 examples, but we doubt the publisher actually sold one in each country. It charged $275,000 for each, which makes this one – apparently sold new to a customer in Belgium – seem like a relative steal.

Consigned for RM Sotheby's auction in New York next month, it's valued between $125,000 and $175,000, and is offered without reserve. Of course, you could get yourself a used Ferrari road car for about that much – even less if you go older with more miles – but something tells us that whoever might be bidding on this tome already has a Ferrari or two in the garage, and is just looking for the right one to put on the (hopefully sturdy) coffee table.
